Position Summary
The Director of Nursing Services (DNS) will oversee the functions of the Nursing Unit of a Critical Access Hospital. The DNS leads the frontline nursing staff and delivers excellent patient care and experience. The DNS is resonsible for creating an environment of patient-centered care through evidence-based standards and quality patient care. The DNS manages and oversees the nursing units for Med-Surg, Operating Room, Labor and Delivery, Emergency Department/ER, Trauma, Drug Room/Pharmacy, Clinical Education, Discharge Planning/Social Services, and ancillary services such as Cardiopulmonary/Respiratory services. The DNS is responsible for the oversight of the quality of patient care, creation of policies and procedures, and is involved with collaboration of the patient’s care team during discharge. The DNS works closely with the Nursing team for continued education, skills and compliance monitoring. The DNS works with other BMHD departments such as Rehabilitation Services, Radiology and the Laboratory team to ensure appropriate patient care and services are being performed as best as possible.
The DNS must possess strong leadership qualities that instills trust and confidence into the Nursing Team and Patients.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Potentially serves on the District Administrative team.
- Promotes patient safety with high quality clinical and patient care standards in the nursing units.
- Possesses knowledge of CMS regulations, reviews new regulations and prepares for regulatory surveys for both acute care and swing bed programs.
- Oversees the Nurse Staffing Committee, ensures the Nurse Staffing Plan is followed, remains in compliance with the Oregon Health Authority staffing laws, and is updated as required.
- Collaborates with department leads on best practice for nursing care, developing and updating clinical policies, developing quality initiatives and performance improvement activities.
- Collaborates with department leads to ensure that required patient documentation in the EHR is present, recommends changes to the EHR if needed to comply with new regulations.
- Communicates activities and nursing/patient care issues to hospital leadership.
- Collaborates with department leads and CFO for budgeting new equipment, supplies and continued education programs.
- Recommends, supports and participates in education and training, including orientation of new staff and competency evaluation of all clinical staff. Encourages and facilitates the professional advancement of employees by affording opportunities for further education.
- Participates in hospital board meetings, medical staff meetings and on other hospital committees as appropriate.
- Completes annual performance evaluations for all reporting department.
- Works toward a resolution of personnel issues with assistance from HR as needed.
- Assists in interview process and recommends hire of new team members.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications, attending webinars, establishing professional networks, participates in professional organizations.
- Write reports, contribute to grant applications, update other documents as needed.
- Liaison between nurses, physicians and hospital administration.
- Any additional duties pertaining to daily operations of the hospital as assigned by the CEO.

- Knowledge of customer service concepts.
- Must be extremely detail oriented.
- Proven ability to communicate effectively, both in written and oral form.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Proven ability to work as part of a team, in a fast-paced production-oriented environment.
- Expresses excellent judgment, discretion and decision making skills, represents BMH in an ethical manner.

- Working knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, CMS standards for critical access hospitals and swing bed program, Oregon Health Authority nurse staffing laws, National Patient Safety Goals.
Education, Experience & Certification/Licensure
Required:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing, clinical nursing experience in the acute care setting.
- Active and unencombered RN license in Oregon.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certified by American Heart Association (AHA).
- MUST obtain within 60 days of hire.
Preferred:
- Master of Science degree in Nursing (MSN) or related education
- Business administration, healthcare administration or healthcare education (MBA, MHA, MHE).
