Position Summary

The Clinical Laboratory Manager will oversee the operations of the clinical laboratory.  Duties include managing overall lab operations; developing procedures to ensure safety, security, quality, and accuracy of results; designing and performing test procedures; analyzing requests for tests and equipment; tending to administrative and management matters; consulting with principal investigators; and assisting in budgeting.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and direction in accordance with organizational and departmental goals and objectives.  Supervises daily activities/acts as a resource to solve problems, schedule and assign work.  Responsible for hiring, training, and disciplinary actions as needed. Acts as an advisor on technical issues related to the laboratory.
  • Develops and maintains departmental policy and procedure manuals in accordance with organizational policies and requirements of regulatory agencies.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships within the laboratory and with other departments.  Facilitate communication on a daily basis. Insures that staff is aware of all pertinent departmental information. Resolves technical and administrative problems within the department; reports appropriately to the CEO infractions of policy; provides proper documentation regarding counseling and infractions.
  • Determines departmental staffing requirements and assures that a qualified staff, balanced to the workload, is maintained for 24-hour coverage. The clinical laboratory manager is a working manager and will participate in both clinical work as well as participating in the call schedule.
  • Supervises the management of resource material, keeping a proper level of supplies on hand.
  • Consults with physicians and nurses on lab finding, schedules and availability of tests.  Stays current on what equipment and techniques are available.
  • Prepares preliminary budgets and operates the department within the approved budget guidelines.  Participates in cost containment meetings and submits equipment requests with cost, justification, and revenue and cost reduction potentials.
  • Conducts departmental meetings and keeps appropriate minutes and records.  Notifies staff of any lab policy or procedure changes on a regular basis.
  • Develops, maintains and revises the laboratory quality improvement and compliance programs. Evaluates results of quality control, implements corrective action when indicated and documents actions.
  • Promotes public relations for the laboratory by maintaining a professional image and conduct.  Interacts with those outside the lab in a professional manner.
  • Able to perform appropriately in emergency situations and to organize staff to perform effectively in cases of multiple person emergencies.
  • Check medical necessity requirements on Medicare patients’ referral forms, checks the daily laboratory bills of errors, checks the monthly Reference lab bill for consistency with tests performed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Maintains self-motivation and sustains a high level of momentum.
  • Able to successfully prioritize when faced with requests, demands and deadlines.
  • Knowledge of customer service concepts.
  • Must be extremely detail oriented and able to perform accurate and thorough recordkeeping.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively, both in written and oral form.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team, in a fast-paced production-oriented environment.
  • Ability to prioritize, highly organized.

Education, Experience & Certification/Licensure

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or a directly related field is required.
  • MLS ASCP Certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree and Medical Laboratory Scientist ASCP Certified.  
  • Five years working experience in a clinical laboratory setting with increasing levels of responsibility demonstrated.
