John Day, Oregon
John Day was named after a young Virginian and scout of the Astor Overland Expedition in 1811. Today, John Day is a business community and trading center that is almost surrounded by the steep hills and rugged peaks of Malheur National Forest. Throughout Malheur National Forest, you will find lakes, meadows, creeks, and forests. During the winter, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and sledding are very popular. In the summer, campers enjoy campgrounds and hikers have more than 200 miles of trails to enjoy.
Grant County, Oregon
Grant County was created on October 14, 1864, from parts of Wasco and Umatilla Counties. The county was named for General Ulysses S. Grant because he was assigned to help protect the early settlers in Oregon before the Civil War. Natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities are abundant in Grant County. Campgrounds are plentiful and three wilderness areas are located in Grant County. Thousands of acres of public land offer backpacking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, hunting, fishing, or horseback riding.
