Our History

Blue Mountain Hospital

Blue Mountain Hospital is a full-service acute care hospital that was originally built in 1949 in Prairie City. The hospital was then rebuilt in 1960 in John Day. In May of 2001, ground was broken for the seven-million dollar replacement facility that was completed in August 2003.

Blue Mountain Hospital District

Blue Mountain Hospital District is a non-profit organization directed by a local Board of Directors. The District consists of a 25-bed hospital located in John Day, and a 40-bed care center in Prairie City. John Day currently has a general surgeon as well as several family practice providers, including physicians and Advanced Practice Providers. We participate in the Oregon Health Sciences University Family Practice Residency program, which rotates residents and interns through our community on a regular basis.

Our Resources

Staff

Blue Mountain Hospital is well-staffed, and most nurses are ACLS and trauma-certified. We have three monitored IMCU beds, two remodeled birthing suites, and two surgery suites for inpatient and outpatient same-day surgeries. We are a level IV trauma hospital in the Oregon State Trauma System; we have 24-hour emergency department coverage, medical evacuation to tertiary care centers by Air Link of Oregon and Life Flight, and an on-site helipad for rapid transport under critical circumstances. The hospital has ambulance services that are fully staffed by skilled EMSs, EMTs, and Paramedics, and a dedicated team of EMS volunteers who all work together to protect our community during emergencies.

Clinics

The Hospital houses multiple clinics and services: a Surgery Clinic, a Rural Health Family Practice Clinic, Home Care services, and Hospice services. Our Surgery Clinic is staffed by Board-Certified General Surgeons. Additionally, our Rural Health Family Practice Clinic, the Strawberry Wilderness Community Clinic (SWCC), has several providers including family physicians and Advanced Practice Providers.  The Hospital also offers monthly specialty clinics with physicians specializing in urology, ophthalmology, cardiology, podiatry, and dermatology.
